Oxoid™ Buffered Peptone Water (BPW) (5kg) is a large-scale, non-selective enrichment medium designed to facilitate the recovery of sub-lethally injured microorganisms, particularly Salmonella, from food and environmental samples. BPW provides a stable pH environment that encourages the growth and repair of stressed bacteria before they undergo selective enrichment. This makes it an essential medium in microbiological testing for foodborne pathogens, especially in the first stages of pathogen detection.

Key Features:

• Form: Dehydrated powder
• Weight: 5kg
• Application: Pre-enrichment of stressed bacteria, such as Salmonella, from food and environmental samples
• Composition: Rich in peptones for bacterial growth; phosphate buffer system ensures pH stability and optimal recovery conditions
• Preparation: Suspend 10g of the dehydrated medium in 1 litre of distilled water, mix thoroughly, and autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes
• Yield: Approximately 500 litres of prepared medium
• Storage: Store the dehydrated medium at 10–30°C, protected from moisture and light
• Compliance: Suitable for use in microbiological testing protocols for the recovery and pre-enrichment of pathogens like Salmonella
